  • What are your favourite "harmony" songs?

I'm always on the lookout for songs with a great two-part harmony. male-male or male-female. What are your favourites?

In my acoustic duo with the female vocalist from my band, we do a ton of harmony tunes. Believe it or not, Jack Straw, a Grateful Dead tune, has nice harmonies. Here are her and I doing it, though this was our FIRST gig together with no rehearsal lol. She also isn't playing guitar on this one (yet!)

I would also recommend a bunch of Indigo Girls tunes (we do Closer To Fine, Galileo, and Secure Yourself). Beatles make for great harmonies (Love Me Do, We Can Work It Out, and many more). Also a bunch of other Dead tunes work for nice harmonies. Eagles tunes, also try Rocket Man acoustically. It is very nice. We actually also do a harmony version of Sweet Baby James. She is improvising the harmonies here (to maybe give you an idea):

Other tunes to try: Teach Your Children, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer, Sounds Of Silence, Scarborough Fair, Leather & Lace (Henley and Stevie Nicks), Drift Away, etc. We do all these tunes (working on Suite Judy now)

I have a love/hate with harmony songs. I love them because they sound great. I hate them because with my group of friends that I get together with I am the only one that can sing harmonies. When I do a song there is no one around to handle the harmomies.

I have been in groups like this. Honestly, I feel your pain. It is VERY frustrating.

I mentioned this song in the exchanging setlist thread -

          "Dance with me" by Orleans.
I don't think it's a complicated harmony song, but I think it's a beautiful one. And it's one of my favourites.

Oh man those are AWESOME ones! I used to do Endless Love with this amazing singer in a wedding band a while back, and Two Of Us...well, what can you say? Just great.

Hey, speaking of Lionel Richie, me and Jocelyn (my female vocalist) do a nice harmony version of Stuck On You in our acoustic project. But we had to get creative with the adding harmonies.

                  lefty...Everly Brothers FTW!
Paul McCartney even cited their harmony style as a major influence of his early on.
Rick Nelson, well, with the Jordanaires, really...four part, not 2...
personal fave would be Simon and Garfunkel (we're from the same 'hood in NYC)...the Boxer, Mrs. Robinson, America...Bridge...
recent one I liked was 'More Than Words Can Say'
"We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties due to reality fluctuations. The elves are working tirelessly to patch the correct version of reality. Activities here have been temporarily disabled since the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and reason may be incomprehensible during this indeterminent period of instability. Normal service will be restored once we are certain as to what 'normal' is."

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally used up and worn out, shouting '...man, what a ride!'

I think most of The Beatles songs with that 2 and 3 part harmonies they did were great. For example "Eight Days A Week" is a great example of their brilliant yet simple harmonies. I also love the Everly Bros. and anything Emmylou Harris sings harmony on is awesome to me.

When playing and singing with my wife, we love doing "If I fell" by the Beatles and "Closer to Fine" by the Indigo Girls. Both are killer harmony songs.

Here's a great old tune by Nino Tempo and April Stevens, called "Deep Purple". I love this song.

                            and a bit later, they followed up with this;
